Backtick is committed to providing a work environment free of sexual, racial, or any other form of harassment and discrimination. This applies to all interactions, whether in-person, on Slack, via email, or at company events.
Employee Responsibilities
- Be an Active Ally: If you witness harassment, and it is safe to do so, speak up in the moment or offer support to the victim immediately after.
- Report Incidents: If you experience or witness harassment (sexual, racial, disability-based, etc.), report it immediately to your manager or through our anonymous reporting channel. You do not need "proof" to raise a concern; we investigate all reports.
- Respect Boundaries: Understand that consent and professional boundaries are non-negotiable. What might be a "joke" to you could be a hostile environment for a colleague.
Manager Responsibilities
- Immediate Escalation: You are legally and ethically required to report any incident of harassment shared with you to the Founders/HR, even if the employee asks you to keep it "between us."
- Maintain Confidentiality: Share information only with those necessary to the investigation. Protecting the privacy of all involved is critical to a fair process.
- Prevent Retaliation: Ensure that no employee faces negative consequences for reporting harassment or participating in an investigation. Retaliation is a separate, fireable offense.
- Model Inclusion: Proactively shut down "locker room talk" or exclusionary behavior before it escalates into harassment.
