AI Setup

Backtick's Ask AI features are powered by Google Gemini. AI access is included for all registered users — no setup required to get started.

Included AI credits: Every registered account gets a pool of shared AI credits. These cover typical day-to-day usage of Ask AI, bullet-point explanations, and code explanations.

Unlimited access with your own key: If you use AI heavily or want to ensure uninterrupted access regardless of shared credit limits, you can add your personal Google Gemini API key. When a personal key is on file, it is used instead of the shared credits.

How to add your own key:

Step 1 — Get your key from Google:

  1. Go to aistudio.google.com
  2. Sign in with your Google account
  3. Click API Keys and create a new key
  4. Copy the key

Step 2 — Add it to Backtick:

  1. Go to your Account page
  2. Find the Gemini API Key section
  3. Paste your key and click Save

For security, only the last few characters of your key are shown after you save it. You can update or remove the key at any time.

AI Usage Tracking

Backtick tracks how many AI requests you make each month so you can see your activity and — when you are using the shared platform key — so that usage stays fair for everyone.

What is counted. Requests are grouped into three categories:

Category What it covers
Standard Q&A questions and bullet-point / code explanations
Authoring AI-powered playbook reorganization (authors and admins)
Image AI image generation

When limits apply. Limits only apply when your requests are going through Backtick's shared Gemini key. If you have added your own personal Gemini key — or if you are a member of a team that has its own key — your requests are counted but never blocked.

Seeing your usage. Your current month's usage for each category is shown at the bottom of your Account page, including how many requests you have made and your monthly limit. If no limit has been set for your account, the limit shows as Unlimited.

When you reach a limit. If you reach your monthly limit on the shared key, AI features will be temporarily unavailable until the first of the next month. To avoid interruptions, add your own Google Gemini key — this removes the platform limit entirely.
